Herb Seiler was born in 1928 in Czechoslovakia, but grew up in Austria as a German citizen. He attended the Goathe Schule (Fine Arts School) in Linz from 1946 to 1950, and the Summer Academy at Salzburg under Professor Jacomo Mazu in 1953. After working as a sculptor in Austria, Seiler traveled to Africa on his own. He traveled for eight months before reaching Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where lived and taught at the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts for sixteen years until in 1985 he moved himself and his family to St. Thomas. During his stay in Ethiopia, he worked with bronze, marble and fiberglass on public and private assignments, including various artworks for Emperor Haile Sellassie and the Imperial Palace. His work consists of statues, busts, reliefs in bronze and marble, over-life sized lions, and others. Seiler participated in the Ethiopian Pavilions at the World’s Fairs of Montreal, Canada (1967), and Osaka, Japan (1970). Herbert Seiler has had many group and solo exhibitions in Austria, Ethiopia, Germany, the United States, and Hong Kong. Seiler left St. Thomas after nine years and returned to his family’s summer home on the Greek island of Pharos where he now concentrates on oil paintings. |
