GUIDO LLINÁS: FORGOTTEN CUBAN MASTER

Guido Llinás was a master painter and printmaker, born in Cuba, in 1923, and living in France from 1963 until his death in 2005. In Havana he found affinity with Abstract Expressionism, but in Paris during the 1960s his prints began to feature a series of "marks" - squiggles, crosses, doubled crosses and arrows, inspired by Afro-Cuban and Abakua ritual sign systems. The designs are painted and/or incised mainly in what he calls the color black. Polyrhythmic grids with fragmented accents and multiple layers create fascinating patterns. Llinás work has been exhibited at museums and institutions in France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Mexico.

The exhibit is accompanied by a catalogue, the first totally dedicated to Llinás' printmaking. Essays by Alejandro Anreus, Ph.D. and Juan A. Martinez, Ph.D. Acknowledgement and interview by Prof. Ricardo Viera, Curator of the exhibition.
