Directors’s Statement:

Howard Finster is among the rarest of the rare in the history of 20th century art. A retired rural Baptist preacher with a sixth-grade education, he combined an untethered imaginative intelligence with an evangelist’s zeal and a fearless independence to create art with a unique power. Considered by scholars, curators, and historians of art to be among the most important artists of the latter 20th century, he created nearly 50,000 works of art over a 26-year period——the largest known body of original art ever created by a single person. Potent, driven, and unrestrained, his creations encompassed a wide range of media: painting and printmaking, sculpture, language art, and mixed media works of his own invention——all this in addition to the fantastic three-acre environment he created in Summerville, Georgia called Paradise Garden. Taken as a whole, his vast body of work is an unparalleled tour de force. Astonishingly, Howard Finster worked fluidly with artistic vocabularies that were only being explored in the contemporary art world. This documentary highlights the visionary spirit that drove Howard Finster, presenting him as the wonderful, eccentric, and creative personality he was. Here is "the world according to Howard," a universe  that was at once unpredictable, full of humor, passionate, mysterious, and often prophetic. The film also presents "Howard according to the world," told through interviews with experts in the field——museum and gallery curators, art critics and collectors——as well as Howard’’s family members and a variety of well-known artists and celebrity personalities who have found enjoyment and inspiration in the work of Howard Finster.  These accounts establish Howard Finster as truly a national treasure and his work as one of the most important contributions to the world of art in the 20th century. I Can Feel Another Planet In My Soul explores the vision that drove him and lifted him from obscurity to become an icon for a generation of artists and an inspiration for our time.
